Are we really there yet ?
The apocalyptic scenario described in the Terminator Movies.
As new technologies related to ML and AI gain momentum mortal administrators like us DBAs and SYS Admins wonder if our days are really numbered.
So Here is a Fact Check. -
Yes the ML and AI Technologies are here to stay and are only evolving.
AI algorithms which were restricted to main frames and super computers are now running on VM environments on people's laptops aided by the GPU power.
So who is in the best position to exploit them? I believe it's the DBA and data analytics fraternity who were managing huge databases and data sets for their entire careers. The business people know the parameters and dimensions of business but they cannot adopt to technology as fast as we can.
As markets over the world are getting saturated and competition is rising among companies to control the major chunk of this market, It's Data Analytics that they turn too. To give not only answers to their business questions but also insights into their business that they never had.
Driving all the above will be a new breed of engineers proficient in ML and AI technologies. It's people like us who have to adapt fast to this ever changing landscape and understand how data is driving business and growth, how it's influencing policy making from Government's to Corporates.
The MR (Measles-Rubella) Vaccine Drive in India -
A few months back there was a compulsory Measles Vaccination Drive carried out at school levels all over India. It caused a pandemonium of sort with the kids running scared of getting the shots.
A few days later I was doing a self project on Data Analytics using Oracle Data Visualization Desktop. I pulled up some freely available data sets off the web. One of them was UNICEF data on death by diseases in every country of the globe.
As I drilled down into the data set and filtered down to India, the diseases that was one of the biggest killers was not AIDS or CANCER etc it was MEASLES.
Now as a Indian citizen I understood the importance of this vaccination.
With this I present you a short tutorial on this unique experience of data analytics using the ODVD tool and the unicef data as a data set.
Hope this sets you on you path to become a DBA again.....i.e. Data Base Analyst !
